Homemade Baby Gifts

Homemade Baby Gifts

It can be really hard choosing gifts for a baby.  Sometimes one can go out shopping and find absolutely nothing which seems special enough to give to your best friends when they have a baby, especially if it is their first child.

How To Get A Really Special Present.

If you want your gift to be really special it needs to be personalized.  This usually means getting names embroidered or initials engraved, but there is something much more personal, homemade baby gifts are far more special than anything you can buy.

What To Make?

With homemade baby gifts you have to choose carefully, they cannot simply be returned to the shop, and you really want the parents to like it so that they enjoy the gift rather than feel encumbered by it.  Firstly you must decide if you want your homemade baby gifts to be kept for ever or to be used/eaten and enjoyed.

Homemade Baby Gifts To Keep

If you want you homemade baby gifts to be kept you have two options, either small so that keeping it does not take up space or useful so that it would never occur to the parents to get rid of it.  The obvious small gifts are either clothes or a soft toy.  Bear in mind the age of the baby.

The advice is to wean a baby around six months, but many mothers, especially those with big hungry babies will start around five months.  As many mother will tell you, however hard you try with bibs the babies somehow manage to get food down the inside of them!

The advice here is that if you are giving homemade baby gifts of clothes it is best for them to be pre-five months old as the clothes are less likely to get stained with food and the parents are more likely to keep them!  The other option is to give a homemade baby gift which will be used for a long time then you have to find something which is suitable for the family.

A good choice here is a baby blanket, if these are made large enough, when the baby moves from a cot into a bed it can be put over the child’s duvet to keep warm in winter.

By the time the child is in a full sized bed, there is a good chance that the next one may be on its way and the use of the blanket will start all over again.   Remember, if you are making a baby blanket it must be easy to care for, using fabulous wools or materials which are a nightmare to wash means that it may get pushed to the back of the linen cupboard and forgotten.

Along a similar line to homemade blankets there is another homemade baby gifts classic, a quilt.  This can be personalized to the family.

Homemade Baby Gifts For A Special Occasion.

If you are planning a gift for a special occasion such as a christening or first birthday, it is worth running the idea passed the parents as they may have other family items which they want to use and they will not wish to upset you by not using your gift!

The most obvious of these types of gifts would be a christening blanket or outfit, however, if these are already catered for you may find that there is a family event, a special anniversary or birthday, for which there will be a big party and an outfit may be required.
