when can you move a child from a car seat to a flat back “booster” type seat?

Question by 2 due May 3, 2011: when can you move a child from a car seat to a flat back “booster” type seat?
my son is one and almost 30 pounds, so i was wondering if i could buy one of those flat backed car seat “boosters” for him. not the one with no back. the one he is in now is a car seat that was front and rear facing, and he seems to be very uncomfortable in it!

He can use a convertible carseat with the 5-point harness (interior harness) at his age. He can’t move to a booster seat (which uses the car’s seatbelt) until he is 4 years old.
